Lucifer knows that Sam is watching, but he wants to make sure that Sam knows that he knows. So he runs his hand up and down the cue he’s holding and Sam chokes on his beer, spits it out right onto the bar. Lucifer smiles while he watches Dean slap Sam on the back. Sam splutters an explanation and glares at Lucifer with a heat that’s not angry so much as challenging.

It turns out that Lucifer bending over pool tables and licking his fingers before counting money has an incredible effect on Sam. It becomes a well-disguised public display, with Lucifer seeing how far he can go before Sam slams his glass down onto the table and storms off. Lucifer usually ends his game shortly after.

There is a dive outside Tulsa that they can never go back to because they snapped the sink clean off the wall when they locked themselves into the bathroom.

Not once has he told Lucifer to go.

There’s something wrong with that, he well knows. He should be screaming it, furious and raging, kicking out and yelling for him to go, just go.

But he hasn’t. He isn’t. He doesn’t.

“You want me to stay,” Lucifer says, the corner of his lips just upturned, far more of a smirk shining in his eyes than anything. “You want me, Sammy.”

And that’s true. Shamefully, madly, it’s all but pathetic.

He opens his mouth to contradict, to argue, but the words won’t come. Instead he turns his head and squeezes his eyes shut, burying his head in the scratchy motel pillow.

Lucifer sighs almost sweetly, curled against his back, spooning him. “No need to be so sad, Sammy. This is your choice. It’s what you want. You know I would never trick you into anything.”

Silence.

“Is this not what you want, Sammy?” Lucifer asks, voice rising with false curiosity. “Because I would hate to displease you.”

He grips the sheets between shaking fingers, the muscles of his face clenched either to stop himself from crying or saying something he knows he shouldn’t. Like what? There’s all sorts of stupid things he’s thought about saying. Some of them reckless and dangerous, like pointing out Lucifer’s daddy issues or how jealous he is of the love and trust Dean gives that Michael never would. Bad idea. Then there’s other ideas of saying things like ‘you were right’, ‘you’re always right’, ‘I miss y-’

Yeah, bad idea.

“Sammy. Sam.”

He squeezes his eyes shut, pressing back against Lucifer and trying with all his might to pretend that the movement was unintentional.

“What do you want, Sam? Tell me.”

He opens his mouth, tries, really does try to say it, ‘go’. His breath catches, voice choked as he finally manages to speak, but it’s the wrong word and amidst the shame and guilt he feels, he can hear his own voice saying, “stay.”
